The night is winding down
And you’re preparing for bed
From the kitchen you hear a knock
Or was it in your head?
Tree branches scrape against the glass
While shadows dance along the wall
You hear the knocking come again,
But this time, down the hall.
You stray from the safety
Of the beaming bedroom light
Sneaking further into the pitch dark
Ready for a fight.
Adrenaline surges through your body.
You can hear your heartbeat in your ears.
Knock. Knock. There it goes again.
Adding fuel to flame your fears.
Your voice is shaky as you call out
A questioned greeting towards the sound
Half expecting a voice in return
Instead, two knocks were found
Goosebumps race across your flesh
And a shiver up your spine
You’re tempted to take a step towards,
Like you’re hooked on someone’s line
You feel the tug; you feel the pull
As they attempt to reel you in
You pull away; you fight their grip
And vow that they won’t win.
Knock. Knock. It’s closer now.
Bearing down on the hall
You turn to run, but it has a hold
You trip, stumble, and fall.
You scramble and you scuttle
Back to the safety of your room.
You slam the door and close your eyes
In the face of your certain doom.
Knock. Knock. It softly leaves
A message on your door.
Then it retreats back down the hall
Leaving only terror in my core.
